When Grandma is the Caregiver and Cancer Strikes
"LaTeesha" never imagined she would raise another generation. But when the judge assigned her custody of her grandson, "Hayes", she embraced her new role with enthusiasm. "He is the light of my life," LaTeesha tells us with a smile. "Like any 3-year-old boy, he loves superheroes...especially Spiderman."
Unfortunately, LaTeesha's recent breast cancer diagnosis has left her scrambling for help. "Hayes relies on me for everything. I don't know how I'm going to get my treatment and take care of him at the same time."
That's where A Small Miracle Foundation comes in.
Since 2005, ASMF has been providing charitable childcare to families affected by cancer throughout Dallas-Fort Worth. In fact, through the generosity of our donors, we've been able to provide over 10,000 hours of free childcare to more than 80 families. And now, ASMF is stepping up to help LaTeesha by ensuring that her grandson is safe and cared for while she attends weekly chemotherapy treatments.
Whether it's a parent, sibling or even a grandparent fighting cancer, ASMF and our supporters make sure that no cancer patient is forced to choose between getting the treatment they need and the childcare they deserve.
"Knowing that Hayes will be taken care of at home in a familiar setting, so that I can get to my doctor appointments, means so much. It's such a blessing!"
